The Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council announced Central DeWitt and its Family and Consumer Science Program as one of the 37 school districts joining the STEM BEST® (Businesses Engaging Students and Teachers) + HD (High Demand) Program. The STEM BEST Program brings schools and businesses together to provide students with real workplace experiences, introduce businesses and career opportunities in Iowa and gain career-ready skills. The STEM BEST + HD Program encourages teachers and industry professionals to work side-by-side to develop a work-based learning model that incorporates STEM subjects like mathematics and science with experiential learning opportunities to emphasize high-demand skills for the workplace. The Council's investment of professional and financial support can be used for curriculum development and coordination, educator training and development in workplace-classroom integration and preparing work-based learning environments. The proposal Central DeWitt submitted was to purchase a food truck that will provide students an opportunity to learn a new set of culinary skills, help them develop employability skills, and learn how to run a business. The hope is that cross-curricular connections can be made with business students to learn about budgeting and marketing. Throughout the year, students will partner with community organizations, businesses and individuals to cater events and show off their talents. STEM education is important because it gives students a chance to develop a variety of skills through hands-on learning in an engaging way, Alisa Sage, FCS teacher, said. Through the use of the food trailer in my FCS program, students will get a chance to develop a variety of 21st century skills on top of learning skills essential to the hospitality and tourism industry. Even if the students who use the food trailer don't pursue a career in culinary arts, they'll still be able to develop valuable skills that can be applied to any career field. Through this program, I want students to further develop their culinary skills as well as their employability skills. I also believe that the food trailer will be an excellent way for students to make a connection with our community members through the different events we will be catering. The STEM Council Executive Committee reviewed and approved of 37 new or expanded partnerships supported by guidance, collaboration and financial investment of up to $40,000 each.
