CDHS students and local businesses benefit from work-based learning

We are lucky to have several local businesses participate in our work-based learning program which teaches Central DeWitt students of all skill levels valuable employability skills. Thank you to MJ's East, DeWitt Referral Center, Sunrise Café, American Fence & Pool, DeWitt Pet Hospital, CDHS, Bauer Repair, and UCC First Congregational Church for helping our students succeed! Work-based learning is a supervised program that links knowledge gained at the work site with a planned program of study. It also provides students work opportunities they may not otherwise have been able to obtain on their own. Not only are these students gaining experience in various careers, but they are also focusing on employability skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving, time management, having consistent attendance, building positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors, critical thinking, decision making, and stress management. Deb Jasper, job coach, supervises the students at their work site and has seen first-hand the way this program increases the students' self-confidence, in turn, making them valuable employees. There are also benefits for the businesses who participate. Work-based learning experiences allows employers to hire job-ready individuals, reducing training costs and improving employee retention. We have built a strong relationship with many businesses over the years and are looking to grow and share this program with many more in our community! If your business is interested in participating in work-based learning, please contact Work-Based Learning Coordinator Lori Regenwether at lori.regenwether@cd-csd.org. Also, watch for an upcoming article in The Observer to learn more about this beneficial program.
