Today Central DeWitt students observed Veterans Day in a number of ways and for the first time in four years, all four schools were together in one location to honor veterans during an assembly at the high school. Led by CDHS Student Council, the assembly began with the Presentation of Colors by members of the DeWitt American Legion followed by the CDMS and CDHS choirs singing the national anthem under the direction of Mrs. Olson and Mr. Uttech. Students recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the high school choir sang God Bless America. Guest speaker, Colonel Jesse T. Curry, the Commander and District Engineer of the Rock Island Arsenal, shared an inspiring message about how heroes don't always look like the superheroes we see in movies. They are the men and women who have fought to protect our freedoms. The CDHS band, directed by Mr. Greubel, played Inchon by Robert W. Smith, a piece inspired by the landing at Inchon during the Korean war. The assembly concluded with the Retirement of the Colors. Later in the day, Ekstrand students walked to St. Joseph Cemetery where they searched for veteran's graves and did rubbings of their military markers. Third graders visited the DeWitt Area Veteran's Memorial where they had a scavenger hunt to find teachers' relatives who have served. CDIS students put together a special Veterans Day edition of Saber Nation News Show and a Veterans Day newspaper. See links below: Newspaper: https://www.canva.com/design/D... Saber Nation News Show: Thank you to the CDHS Student Council, the DeWitt American Legion and Auxiliary, Colonel Jesse T. Curry, our choirs, band, students, staff and community members for helping us honor our veterans in a respectful and beautiful way! And most of all, thank you to all of our veterans for your service and all you have done for our country!
