Mrs. Burbach being surprised with award

Congratulations to CDHS Physical Education teacher Morgan Burbach who was chosen as a WQAD “My Favorite Teacher” award recipient! Mrs. Burbach was recognized because of a heartfelt essay submitted by junior Naomi Ubel. We’re lucky to have Mrs. Burbach as part of our Saber family because of her dedication and the positive impact she has on our students! This is definitely well-deserved!

Why Mrs. Burbach is the Best

Hello, my name is Naomi Ubel. I go to Central Dewitt High School in DeWitt, Iowa. For “My Favorite Teacher Award” I am nominating my P.E. teacher Mrs. Burbach. She deserves this award more than another person I know. She has been through so much and continues to show positivity and courage. She shows so much compassion for her students and cares for each and every one of them. She builds great relationships with all of her students, anytime you go to her office someone is in their chatting with her. She pushes everyone to be their best even if you aren’t in her class.

I transferred from North Scott my sophomore year and I was super nervous going to a small-town school. I met Mrs. Burbach through my personal fitness class, her and the other personal fitness teacher combined classes sometimes. I was having a horrible panic attack and she noticed right away and jumped into action, she helped me get through my panic attack by teaching me breathing techniques. I’ve seen her help many other students through things they’re going through by talking to them, walking a lap with them or just letting them cry it out. No other teacher I have met has done something like that.

Even when she was going through the hardest time of her life, she still helped others out and made them feel okay when she wasn’t. Her husband was diagnosed with cancer last year, and it was rough on her. But she came to school and smiled, laughed and pushed everyone to be their best. Thankfully her husband is in remission! Everyone has their ups and downs but instead of dwelling on the downs or letting a bad day get to her, she pushes through and that makes a big influence on her students’ life. She lets us know it is okay to have bad days and works with students who are struggling. Last year I was in the hospital for a week and she worked with me to keep my grade up, she showed me so much love, she has truly made an impact on my life and others lives.

Besides her amazing personality, she is also a great teacher. She makes sure everyone can participate in the class. She doesn’t care about what you can’t do, she wants to know what a student can do. If a student isn’t doing a certain lift right, she runs over to show them how, she doesn’t call out anyone for doing something wrong, she doesn’t yell when someone makes a mistake, she simply shows the class how to do something or tells the whole class to “get down 90 degrees for squat!” She makes sure every student reaches their goal in her class and she helps every student succeed.

Mrs. Burbach deserves this award more than anyone I know. She is a really special teacher who is underappreciated within the school for the work she does. So many people look up to her and want to be her. She is an inspiration for all based on what she’s gone through and how she handled it. Mrs. Burbach is someone you can’t not smile at in the hall or say hi to when she’s passing, she is someone who everyone wants to be around because of her bubbly personality and how much she cares for her students and others. I wish everyone had a Mrs. Burbach in their school like ours has, Central Dewitt is so lucky to have her. Please consider Morgan Burbach for the “Best Teacher Award”, thank you!
