NHS is student-driven organization that plans and executes several school and community service projects throughout the year. As October ends, many of us think the time for skeletons is over, though in the Central DeWitt Middle School, it is quite a different story. October 31st through November 2nd mark the celebration of Día de los Muertos, or the “Day of the Dead.” Our 8th-grade art students, and 7th and 8th-grade 3D art students, have prepared a special ofrenda (an altar or offering place) as part of this celebration to honor important people who have passed. The 8th-grade art students each drew a portrait of their selected person, whether that be a relative, famous person, or themselves, in charcoal or graphite pencil. The 3D art students then created a food offering for them using toilet paper, water, and watercolor paint, making dishes such as tacos and pie. The whole ofrenda is covered in tissue paper marigolds, a flower thought to help guide the dead so they may find the offerings and their family, which were made by the 3D art class. Other 8th graders aided during Quest and lunch times in setting up the ofrenda. Fantástico, Sabers! Our fourth graders recently took a journey back to the Middle Ages! As part of their ELA Medieval Unit 2, students explored the fascinating world of knights, castles, and ancient customs. To celebrate, they wrapped up the unit with some exciting hands-on activities: they learned about archery thanks to CDMS Custodian Andy Johnston and CDHS Instructional Coach Keith Townsley demonstrated how catapults work, students crafted their own "armor," and even built castles together! The medieval experience wouldn't be complete without a taste of the past, so they enjoyed some "medieval bread" (honey buns) and apple cider while sharing their persuasive paragraphs. Last week five Central DeWitt juniors were able to participate in Capri College’s Career Day. Students were able to see all education options offered at Capri, while having current Capri students practice their skills on them. On Sunday, Nov. 3rd at 3 p.m., CDHS National Honor Society members will be participating in a scavenger hunt for items needed to put together Thanksgiving Baskets for local families in need. Students will be canvasing most of the neighborhoods in DeWitt and Grand Mound, including the Grace Camp and Timber Creek areas, asking for donations. If you are able to help, please see the list of items that are needed. If NHS does not visit your home on Sunday and you would like to donate items, please contact an NHS member or Ms. DePue at leann.depue@cd-csd.org to make arrangements. 💜💛 We proudly recognize Sarah Johnston as the September Employee of the Month for her exceptional dedication and contributions as the district’s Chief Financial Officer. Since stepping into this vital role last December, Sarah has put in countless hours to understand the intricacies of the district’s financial position, ensuring that everything is in order and aligned with the district's goals. Her love for math and strong ability to problem solve has helped her navigate the complexities of the district’s financials with precision and confidence. “Her role is incredibly challenging and often goes unnoticed, yet she has stepped up in a big way to master a new position,” Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Mishler said. “The district is stronger because of her expertise, dedication, and willingness to grow. We are truly fortunate to have her on our team!” Sarah’s most recent accomplishment includes completing the annual CAR report, which she submitted on time and with meticulous accuracy—a major milestone for the district. Sarah's efforts don’t stop there. She consistently goes above and beyond her job description, and her enthusiasm and commitment extend beyond the administration center reflecting her dedication to the overall success of the district. Outside of work, Sarah is an avid volunteer in her community, driven by a passion to give back to organizations that have impacted her life. She currently serves as a University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital Family Advisory Council member, is on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing State Advisory Board, teaches religious education at St. Joseph Catholic Church, helps lead the Christ in Others Retreat (COR) for high school students, is on the DeWitt Zoning Board of Adjustment and is the CDCSD school board secretary.
