Our Special Olympic Robotic Team is working on a group project that combines technology and the arts to help engage others or increase participation in something they love to do. The team decided to create a logo and a newscast to encourage more students become Unified Buddies! This past week students worked with CDCSD marketing coordinator Laura Miers to create a logo for Unified Buddies and with Producer Creighton Fox and Multimedia Journalist Larry Goodwin from KWQC TV 6 to learn about reporting and putting together a news story. Take a look at the new logo and photos from the TV 6 visit. We can’t wait to see how the rest of the project turns out!

💜.💛 We are excited to announce that Laurie Wildes has been chosen as the very first Central DeWitt Community School District Employee of the Month!
Mrs. Wildes has been with the CDCSD for over 30 years, even retiring once and coming back when help was needed. She has worn many hats over the years including kitchen manager, job coach, associate for the BD program, junior class sponsor, bleacher supervisor, middle school coach, and this year, a speech class monitor.
What stands out about Mrs. Wildes isn’t just the number of responsibilities she has taken on over the years, but her positive attitude, willingness to help without hesitation, and her unwavering dedication. In 28 years of supervising the bleachers at football games, she has only missed one Friday night to attend her daughter’s rehearsal dinner.
According to CDHS Industrial Technology Teacher Tom Prombo, Mrs. Wildes tries every day to make our schools a better place by giving help where needed.
“She is an old-school, hardworking lady whose efforts and caring show in the school,” Mr. Prombo said.
Mrs. Wildes makes it very clear that her number one priority is the students and their well-being. She has always felt comfortable interacting with students and does whatever she can to make sure they have a great school experience.
Freshman Hailee Peters acknowledged how Mrs. Wildes shows genuine concern for students by asking how they are doing in the hallways and freshman Patrick Soesbe said Mrs. Wildes “is the G.O.A.T (Greatest Of All Time).”
We couldn’t agree more! Thank you Mrs. WIldes for all you have done and continue to do for CDCSD!
We received over 100 nominations for Employee of the Month and will be featuring the other nominees in the #SaberSuperstars next week. So, stay tuned to see all the great ways employees are making a difference!

Last week, 18 Sabers, as well as some Cal-Wheat students, took advantage of the Kirkwood Community College visit. Students were able to meet with admissions, listen to a student panel, and get a tour of campus, the rec center, apartments, and the diesel facility. This past week students also had a chance to visit Muscatine Community College, and in the upcoming weeks will visit St. Ambrose and Scott Community College. Great job Sabers for taking advantage of visiting potential options for post-secondary education!

Five CDHS students participated in the Iowa Youth Symposium on October 31st and November 1st. Three of those five, Laura Sutton, Caden Bernauer, and Caleb Kruse, were selected as Outstanding Delegates. Also participating were Livy Crandall and Hannah Moore.
This was the fourth time being selected for this distinction for Miss Sutton who is in her fourth year of participation in the program. This was the thrid time being selected for this distinction by Mr. Bernauer, who is also in his fourth year of participation despite only being a sophomore. Mr. Kruse earned this distinction in his very first year of participation. Way to go, Sabers!
Now the students will prepare for the Iowa Model United Nations conference that will take place in the spring on the University of Northern Iowa campus.

Advanced Chemistry, AP Calculus, AP Computer Science, and AP Physics students took a fascinating trip to Argonne National Laboratory this week! Argonne is one of 17 research laboratories owned by the US Department of Energy. On their visit, they participated in a learning lab where they built Advanced Photon Source (APS) models and also participated in tours of the APS and newest supercomputer, Aurora. The students learned about the work scientists and engineers from around the globe do on site and how it impacts the world.

We are thrilled to share the heartwarming experience our 6th-grade Kindness Crew members had recently while volunteering at Fieldstone of DeWitt. 💜💛
Our Kindness Crew, alongside CDIS School Counselor Mollie Bates and 5th-grade Teacher Angie Hofer, spent a delightful afternoon playing games and spending quality time with the wonderful residents of Fieldstone. Laughter, smiles, and meaningful connections were shared, making it a truly special afternoon for everyone involved.

💜💛 Congratulations to our October 2023 district Student of the Month Noah Speas! He is featured in today's edition of The Observer - DeWitt, Iowa thanks to our friends at First Central State Bank.
When Noah Speas chose Peer STEM as an elective this year, he wasn’t sure what to expect. Peer STEM is a class in which middle school students participate and support STEM students with special needs in learning computer science skills, engineering, and more.
Noah had no idea he would learn much more than science, technology, engineering and math. His experiences in Peer STEM have also taught him the importance of patience and perseverance, that everyone matters, and everyone can succeed no matter their abilities.
Peer STEM teachers Ms. Smith, Mrs. Jackson, and Mrs. Walsh, who nominated Noah for Student of the Month, all agree that he perfectly displays the qualities expected of a Peer STEM student.
“He shows great patience while working alongside various class members, often rephrasing the directions or modeling the expectations for the project,” they said. “He does a great job of including everyone and making sure they all feel valued not only in class, but everywhere in the school!”
Noah is a great role model because of his empathy for all students, as well as his willingness to always lend a helping hand. He exemplifies what it means to be a SABER and will certainly continue to make a difference at Central DeWitt!
