🇱🇷History came to life in kindergarten last week! As part of their Colonial Unit, students dressed the part and proudly shared presentations on colonial trades including cobblers, bakers, tailors, hatters, carpenters, masons, and bricklayers. They presented to parents and fellow students, showing off all they’ve learned!

That same day, Mrs. Petersen’s class also welcomed Ag in the Classroom instructor Jenna Stevens for a hands-on connection to their unit. Students explored George Washington’s role as a farmer, learning about the crops he grew, like corn and wheat.

To top it off, they sampled a colonial favorite, “Johnny Cakes” (cornbread muffins in their case!), known to be one of George Washington‘s favorites! 🌽

Such a fun and meaningful day of learning! To see more photos, visit our Facebook page.

We are proud to recognize Kenzie Riedesel, School Health & Nursing Assistant at Ekstrand Elementary, as our February Employee of the Month! Kenzie consistently goes above and beyond, creating a safe, supportive, and caring environment for everyone who walks through the doors at Ekstrand.

For students, Kenzie is a trusted and comforting presence. Whether it’s providing a bandage, an ice pack, medication, a change of clothes, an allergy-friendly snack, or simply a reassuring hug, she meets each child’s needs with compassion and care. Her ability to make students feel seen, heard, and supported is truly invaluable.

Kenzie’s impact extends just as meaningfully to staff. She is always willing to lend a helping hand—whether that’s checking a staff member’s blood pressure, offering health guidance, or simply being a listening ear during a busy day. Her kindness and approachability make her a go-to resource for many.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Kenzie’s work is the thoughtful attention she gives to students returning after medical procedures. She takes the time to connect with families, ensuring she fully understands each child’s needs before they return to school. Kenzie then communicates those details with office staff, classroom teachers, and associates, helping ensure a smooth, safe, and supportive transition for every student.

Kenzie’s dedication, attention to detail, and genuine care for others do not go unnoticed. She embodies what it means to serve a school community with heart and professionalism.

Congratulations, Kenzie, and thank you for the incredible difference you make at Ekstrand Elementary and across our district every single day! 💜💛

CDHS Family and Consumer Science Teacher Rebecca Barnes recently took part in a collaborative learning experience alongside fellow child development educators from across the Quad Cities.

Together, they coordinated and participated in site visits to Fairmont Pines Head Start, Redeemer Lutheran Preschool, and Villa Montessori School in Moline. These visits provided valuable opportunities to observe a variety of early childhood settings, explore different teaching philosophies, and engage in meaningful professional dialogue about best practices in the field.

Experiences like these strengthen collaboration among educators, deepen understanding of early childhood education, and directly support more authentic, career-connected learning opportunities for students.

We love seeing our teachers continue to learn, collaborate, and bring that knowledge back to our classrooms to benefit students!

On Friday April 10th, the CDHS Student Council hosted an assembly to kick off the start of the spring season. This assembly celebrated the success of athletes in winter sports. They also took time to recognize students that are involved in the many organizations that CDHS has to offer. There were a variety of fun games such as a real-life hungry hippo and a game of head-shoulder-knee cup. Great job to Student Council for ending the week with a great event! Check out this game clip: https://youtube.com/shorts/B53AGkmbtLc?feature=share

🦅Fifth grade students had a unique and engaging learning experience last week with a visit from Rudy Vallejo, a talented Kickapoo storyteller and dancer.

Mr. Vallejo shared meaningful stories and insights from his heritage, helping students better understand the traditions, values, and symbolism within Native American culture—including the significance of the eagle as a sacred and powerful symbol.

Students didn’t just listen—they participated! Through traditional honor and war dances, they experienced firsthand the movement, rhythm, and expression that are important parts of the culture. This interactive opportunity brought learning to life and helped deepen students’ understanding in a memorable way. Check it out: https://youtu.be/dgXLPF--ZCY

A heartfelt thank you to Mr. Vallejo for sharing his time and talents, and to the Central DeWitt PTO for supporting this enriching experience for our students!

One of the most exciting moments of Central DeWitt After Prom is just around the corner — when one lucky senior will be handed the keys to a vehicle at the end of the night! 🚗

This year marks the 16th anniversary of this incredible tradition. For the first 12 years, the giveaway was made possible by Kriegers, and for the past four years, Ed Morse Chevy GMC of DeWitt has proudly continued it.

At this year’s After Prom, one senior will win this 2019 Nissan Rogue — but remember, you must be present to win!

We are grateful for community partners and volunteers who go above and beyond to support our students and help create a safe, fun, and unforgettable night. Thank you, Ed Morse and the Central DeWitt After Prom committee, for your continued generosity! 💜💛
