💜💛 What an incredible experience shared by our students and staff today as they spent the afternoon viewing the solar eclipse! A huge thank you to The Education Foundation of Central DeWitt who provided funds through the Henry Pelham Science Endowment to purchase glasses for all Central DeWitt students and staff.
During the eclipse, many teachers provided activities to enhance the experience such as making pinhole cameras to view the eclipse progress, sketching the eclipse, and providing fun activity sheets to go along with the viewing. Thank you to everyone who made this a great experience for our students!

On Wednesday, members of the CDHS robotics team represented the FIRST Tech Challenge program at the Hawkeye Caucus held in the rotunda of the State Capitol in Des Moines. They got a chance to introduce Herky to their robot. He was a little scared at first, but warmed up to the team eventually. He even tried driving it around! What a fun experience for Herky and our students!

On Thursday, April 11th, all freshmen, juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to attend a Career Expo at the DeWitt Career Advancement Center. Over 50 local businesses will share information about their organizations. Several of these companies are looking for summer and/or part-time employment, and some have employment opportunities for after graduation. Students can also use this event to learn more about various career fields. Students will be emailed a list of businesses attending, information on what each business has to offer at the fair, sample questions to ask, and tips on how to make the most of the event.
Plenty of door prizes will be available for students who are engaged in learning more about local businesses. Please encourage your students to take advantage and participate in this great way to connect with local businesses! If you do not want your student to attend the event, please contact the office so we can remove them from the attendee list.
In addition, there will be a community event from 5-7 p.m. This portion is for the community (parents, previous graduates, students, community members) to attend to learn more about career academies and job opportunities.

💜💛 Congratulations to our March 2024 District Student of the Month Lane Adams! He is featured in today's edition of The Observer thanks to our friends at First Central State Bank.
Third grader Lane Adams was nominated for Student of the Month by Ekstrand Elementary Associate Lauren Jorge and his Third Grade Teacher Madeline Johnson for his generosity, kindness and ability to put others before himself.
In Ms. Johnson’s class, there is an incentive program that gives students the opportunity to earn points for demonstrating good behaviors. After students receive points, they have a chance to turn them in for various prizes.
For most of the school year, Lane has intentionally saved up his points to use on a party for his entire class instead of something for himself. When Lane turned in his points for a class party, he and his classmates together decided to have a root beer float party since that is Lane’s favorite.
“The whole class was happy, and that made me happy,” Lane said. “And, my stomach was happy, too.”
Lane said choosing to have a party for his class was the “good thing to do.” He also saw it as a way to include others who might not have the opportunity to use points to have a party.
“It was so heartwarming to watch his classmates light up from this gesture, but most of all, to see how happy Lane was to make everyone around him smile,” Ms. Jorge said. “He chose to bring happiness to everyone around him instead of reward himself for his year-long hard work and discipline.”
For Lane, being kind and including others is something everyone should do.
“If you’re not kind to them, they might not be kind to other people, which it’s a big loop around the whole world and back to you.” Lane said. “Sure, it might take a long time to get the kindness back to you, but it’s worth it.”
Lane has shown in so many ways this year that not only is he a great student and friend, but also a role model and true SABER.

Check out the unique planets that were on display at the 5th Grade Planet Fair last week! Students created their own planet, built a 3-D model, and prepared a presentation about the characteristics of their planet. This project is part of their solar system lesson. Great job, Sabers!

And, congratulations to the 12 Saber artists whose work was selected for the QC Arts High School Invitational art show! Student work was chosen in a variety of media from Mrs. Richmann and Mrs. Dunlavey’s studio art classes. You can see the work for free at the Rock Island QC Arts Gallery now through April 25, 2024. As you have heard, Superintendent Dr. Dan Peterson has resigned from his position effective June 30, 2024. We are incredibly grateful to Dr. Peterson for the last 16 years he dedicated to Central DeWitt and the numerous and valuable ways he has positively impacted our students, staff, and community as superintendent. You will be missed, Dr. Peterson! Below is a letter he has written to our Saber community:
Dear Saber Family,
I am writing to share with you a significant personal decision. After 16 years of service, I will be stepping down as the superintendent of Central DeWitt Community School
District, effective June 30, 2024. This decision marks the end of a rewarding chapter in my career, one filled with challenges, accomplishments, and the joy of working alongside such a dedicated school community.
Throughout my tenure, we have collectively achieved remarkable successes that have propelled our district forward, enhancing the educational experience for our students. Our achievements in academic excellence, program innovation, and infrastructure development have solidified Central DeWitt’s reputation as a leading institution in education.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to the entire Central DeWitt school community. To our staff, your commitment and expertise have been instrumental in our district’s achievements. Your dedication to our students’ growth and well-being has been the cornerstone of our success. To our students, your passion for learning and your resilience in the face of challenges have been truly inspiring. It has been a privilege to witness your growth and achievements.
As I prepare for this transition, I am filled with pride for what we have accomplished
together and am confident that Central DeWitt will continue to excel and build on this
strong foundation. I am looking forward to seeing the district reach new heights in the
coming years.
