Over the past few weeks, CDIS, CDMS and CDHS physical education classes have been learning the benefits of yoga and mindfulness techniques thanks to Challenge to Change instructors Angela Rickertsen and Bobbi Kelley. Yoga practices are proven to reduce stress, enhance self-esteem, help regulate emotions and improve mental health. We love seeing the students become empowered by what they are learning and excited to see them implement these practices into their daily lives. Prior to Thanksgiving Break, CDIS students and staff celebrated reaching their school-wide behavior goal by having an "Anything but a Backpack Day!“ 💜💛 "Anything but a Backpack Day" is a day when students are encouraged to leave their backpacks at home and bring their school supplies in a different type of container. At CDIS, students brought their supplies in board game boxes, fishing nets, and even rolling luggage (just to name a few)! We loved seeing the creativity of the students and the excitement from students as they entered the building! Mrs. Waleszonia’s class recently decorated a Christmas tree that was put on display at the Quad City Arts Festival of Trees in Davenport. Happy Thanksgiving! Today 35 families in our community will enjoy a Thanksgiving meal thanks to our National Honor Society members and our generous community. Each family receive three boxes overflowing with a variety of non-perishable goods, meats, household supplies, toiletries, milk, butter, eggs and all the fixings for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. On Wednesday, eight Central DeWitt juniors and seniors toured Scott Community College to learn about the several career pathways offered through SCC. Some of their programs include degrees covered under the Last Dollar Scholarship program, which provides Iowans free tuition. In addition, all three EICC campuses offer a scholarship to Central DeWitt students who continue their education at EICC after high school graduation. The highest level of the Connections Scholarship allows students to earn half off tuition for their first year of college. Congratulations to Mr. Waterbury on being named one of Lincolnway Community Foundation's 2023 Leaders Under 40! We are grateful to have Mr. Waterbury as a teacher and coach at Central DeWitt! See what was said about Mr. Waterbury: "After graduating from Wartburg with a BA in Biology, Clay Waterbury took a position with Central DeWitt and has been teaching a variety of science classes for the past 7 years. His classes exhibit a positive environment, which is enhanced by his ability to establish good rapport with his students. While his Field Science classes are very popular, Clay also serves as a positive role model outside of the classroom. He coaches football, basketball and track. He volunteers to help with the DeWitt Parks and Rec youth sports clinics. He helps organize the Dance Marathon that raises money for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. And along with his wife Courtney, who teaches Social Studies at the high school, is Co-advisor of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Central DeWitt high school. Clay has a very strong work ethic and exceeds expectations in terms of time and effort devoted to his students. He loves being a part of the DeWitt community and plans to be here for a long time. According to his nominator, George Pickup, “Clay Waterbury is one of the best young leaders and teachers I have been around in my 38 years as an educator.” That’s saying something."
