🎓✨ Today CDHS celebrated Why Apply Day! This national celebration kicks off college application season by encouraging students to reflect on the reason why they want to pursue education or training after high school.

To spark some inspiration, AmeriCorps Student Leaders Niya Miller and Zoey Fugslang asked some of our high school teachers to share what motivated them to apply and how that decision helped shape who they are today.

Take a few minutes to hear their stories and great advice: https://youtu.be/8mZvwad88Ds

📚🌎 This week CDHS Spanish 3 & 4 students teamed up with 5th grade ELA for a special lesson on the Aztec, Inca, and Maya civilizations. Spanish students designed creative activities that tied into the 5th graders’ current unit while also adding elements of the Spanish language. This cross-grade partnership made history come alive and created a unique learning experience for everyone involved! 🙌

🛝 Learning never looked so fun! Our Peer STEM class was inspired to design and build their very own playground equipment after Ms. Smith read them Recess Time. Mrs. Jackson’s 4th–8th graders worked with their peer helpers using critical thinking to problem solve, communication to collaborate, and initiative to bring their ideas to life. The grand finale? Bringing all their designs together to form one ultimate playground!

It’s hands-on learning like this that builds useful skills for today and tomorrow and is teamwork, and creativity at its best! 💡🙌

GEORGE DIXON: George Dixon and his wife Joane moved to our community in 1983 and quickly made a lasting impact. In 1991, George founded the Central DeWitt Chapter of the FCA, leading with prayer and song. What began with six students grew to 200 by 1999. His dedication to youth and the community earned him numerous honors, including the 1995 AAUW Spirit Award, Liberty Bell Award, Faith in Action Award, and a 1994 National Caring Award nomination.

COLLEEN DUNNEGAN: 1999 graduate Colleen Dunnegan has become a leading professional in her field. In high school, she excelled academically and was active in NHS, FCA, Chorus, Band, and the first Central Sensations Dance Team. 1986-1987-1988 STATE CHAMPION CO-ED GOLF TEAMS: In an unprecedented run, Heather (Deke) Kinney, Dave Rueter, and Mike Howes led Central DeWitt to three consecutive Co-Ed State Golf Championships from 1986–1988—the first and only program to achieve this feat in Iowa. Heather and Dave won in 1986 and 1987 after dramatic playoffs, and in 1988, Heather and Mike secured the 3-peat under the new alternate-shot format, cementing their place in Iowa high school golf history.

Our students’ well-being matters. That’s why we are now providing Classroom Clinic, a telehealth program that provides behavioral and mental health services right here at school. Students are able to meet with a licensed provider in a private, supportive space during the school day—without leaving the building.

👉 We encourage students to use this resource whenever they need support. Together, we can make sure every student has what they need to thrive.

For more information, please reach out to school counselors marybeth.schaible@cd-csd.org (10th-12th grade) or tierra.wall@cd-csd.org (7th-9th grade).
